Safe Medications During Pregnancy


If you need relief from common pregnancy symptoms, the following over-the-counter medications are generally safe to use as directed. If you have any concerns, please contact our office.

Cold & Flu Symptoms

  • Sudafed or Actifed (after 12 weeks)
  • Tylenol Cold & Sinus
  • Cough Drops
  • Robitussin Cough Syrup
  • Benadryl
  • Zyrtec (plain)
  • Claritin (plain)
  • Mucinex (plain)

Constipation

  • Colace (100 mg, once or twice daily)
  • Miralax

Heartburn

  • Mylanta
  • Tums
  • Pepcid
  • Prilosec
  • Nexium
  • Prevacid

Insomnia

  • Benadryl
  • Tylenol PM
  • Melatonin

Diarrhea

  • Imodium AD

Headache

  • Tylenol Regular Strength (325 mg—2 tablets every 4 hours)
  • Tylenol Extra Strength (500 mg—2 tablets every 6 hours)
  • Magnesium Oxide (for headache prevention)

Nausea

  • Vitamin B6 (50-100 mg daily)
  • Unisom (Doxylamine, 25 mg at bedtime)
  • Dramamine

Traveling During Pregnancy—Is It Safe?


Traveling while pregnant can be safe with the right precautions. Here are some tips:

  • Always wear a seatbelt, with the lap belt positioned below your belly and the shoulder strap across your chest.
  • If driving, take frequent breaks to walk and stretch.
  • If flying, move around the aisle when possible and stay hydrated.
  • After 36 weeks, it’s best not to travel more than two hours from home.
  • If you experience any pregnancy complications, your travel restrictions may change—consult your provider.
